FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Cape Fear Cardiology Associates is proud to announce that their echocardiography laboratory is among the first facilities in the nation to receive accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).  Cape Fear Cardiology's echocardiography lab is the only facility in Fayetteville/Cumberland County to hold this accreditation.  According to the ICAEL, accreditation "recognizes a facility's commitment to high quality patient care and the provision of quality diagnostic testing."

At the Cape Fear Cardiology lab facility, patients undergo echocardiogram testing used for the diagnosis and management of many types of cardiovascular disease.  The leading cause of death in the U.S., cardiovascular disease claims one life every 32 seconds, according to the ICAEL.  "An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test that provides us with valuable information on the structure of a patient's heart and blood flow," says echocardiography laboratory director, Dr. Srinivas Munugoti.

The ICAEL accreditation program evaluates critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory. Major factors include the technical abilities of the sonographers administering the echocardiogram and the interpretative abilities of the physicians evaluating the results, which determine the diagnostic accuracy of the examination.
Undergoing the ICAEL accreditation process is voluntary on the part of a laboratory facility.  "We elected to pursue this important accreditation because we are committed to providing the highest standards of care for our patients, as well as for referring physicians," says Dr. Thor Klang, President of Cape Fear Cardiology.
The ICAEL and similar organizations responsible for the accreditation of other procedures are highly regarded by private and government insurance providers. While ICAEL accreditation is voluntary, insurance providers - in an effort to provide quality patient care - are currently considering or in the process of making ICAEL accreditation a requirement for reimbursement.
Located at 3534 Cape Center Drive in Fayetteville, Cape Fear Cardiology Associates has nine cardiologists who are board certified in cardiovascular diseases.  Several of the physicians have additional certifications in areas that include Interventional Cardiology, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and Nuclear Cardiology.
The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) was established with the support of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE,) the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (SOPE) to provide a peer review mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality echocardiographic diagnostic evaluations through a process of voluntary accreditation.  A non-profit organization, the ICAEL is dedicated to promoting health care and ensuring high quality patient care.
